History of Alexandria, Virginia
Alexandria, Virginia is a city located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Founded in 1749, Alexandria is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is an important part of American history. It has seen a number of major events throughout its history, from its role in the Revolutionary War to its current status as a thriving metropolitan area.
The city was originally founded by John Alexander and named after him. He was an English merchant who had come to America looking for opportunities in trade and industry. In 1749, he purchased 6,000 acres of land on the banks of the Potomac River from Lord Fairfax and established Alexandria as a port town. The town quickly became an important trading hub for tobacco, flour, and other goods between England and America during colonial times.
During the American Revolution, Alexandria was occupied by British troops who used it as a base of operations. In 1781, General George Washington crossed the Potomac River with his army and camped outside Alexandria before engaging in battle with British forces at nearby Yorktown. Following this victory, Alexandria became part of the newly formed United States of America.
In 1801, Alexandria was officially incorporated as a city and soon became one of the most important cities in Virginia due to its strategic location near Washington D.C., Baltimore, and other major cities along the East Coast. In 1861 Union troops occupied Alexandria, but eventually withdrew after Confederate forces regained control in 1862. After The War ended, Alexandria slowly recovered from these losses, becoming an important industrial center once again.
