Andalusia, Spain Weather and Climate
Geographical location
Andalusia is the southernmost region of Europe, only the Strait of Gibraltar separates it from the African continent. The region can be reached by plane from Germany in 2.5 to 3.5 hours by flight. Andalusia consists of a total of eight provinces, each named after their capital.
The region of Cadiz can be found at the southernmost tip, Málaga to the east and the main province of Seville to the north. About 8.5 million people live in an area of 87,268 square kilometers. The province of Seville is the most populous region with almost 2 million inhabitants and also has the largest land area in Andalusia.
On the south coast you will find the Andalusian Fold Mountains, with the Sierra Nevada in the center and the 3482 meter high Mulhacén as the highest point on the Iberian Peninsula. The famous Costa del Sol offers a point of contact for all sun lovers and beach holidaymakers in the province of Malaga. The southernmost part of mainland Europe is formed by the Campo de Gibraltar. The Penón de Gibraltar forms the tip of this peninsula.
Climate in Andalusia
Even in the spring months, temperatures in Andalusia reach a pleasant 21 degrees. The plants begin to sprout and envelop the region in a lush green. Some parallels to the North African climate cannot be denied in the weather in Andalusia, the geographical proximity to Morocco is also clearly reflected in the temperatures. The daily values in Malaga climb above 25 degrees Celsius in May and peak at over 30 degrees in July and August. The precipitation values approach zero during this travel time.
In the province of Cordoba, temperatures rise above 30 degrees by the end of May and can reach over 37 ° C at the peak of the season. Córdoba is located inland and is therefore better protected from windy influences, the inland of Andalusia is therefore always a bit hotter than the coastal region. Typical of Andalusia, however, is the clear day-night gradient everywhere.
At night, even in midsummer, temperatures drop below 20 degrees in order to heat up nature again with the setting of the midday sun. This phenomenon is known from North African regions such as Morocco and Tunisia. With summer water temperatures of around 22 degrees, jumping into the sea from July to September is a lot of fun.
When to go to Andalusia
The northern province of Cordoba is inland, where high temperatures can be expected early in the year. The best travel time in the region is therefore from mid-May to the end of September. A slightly different recommendation applies to the coastal province of Málaga, since in this region of Andalusia, beach holidays in particular are at the top of the popularity list for vacationers:
In Málaga and the surrounding area, such high, summer temperatures can only be found from the beginning of June. However, the water temperature has not yet adapted to the air temperature. So a trip to Malaga is only recommended from the beginning of July. We therefore recommend the summer months of July, August and September to be the absolute best time to travel to Malaga.
