Geographical location
The Calabria region is located in the extreme south of the mainland and forms the tip of the Italian boot.
The area has an area of around 15,000 square kilometers and almost two million inhabitants, of which around 91,000 have settled in the capital Catanzaro.
Calabria is divided into five provinces. The metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria is located on the southern tip and is home to over 560,000 people. Calabria is bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the east.
The region is mainly determined by agriculture, especially olives, citrus fruits and various types of fruit grow well on the fertile soil.
Calabria is separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina, which is only about three kilometers wide at its narrowest point. In Reggio Calabria there is an airport that can be reached from Frankfurt in about four hours by plane.
Climate in Calabria
Calabria is one of the sunniest areas in Europe. With 320 annual days of sunshine you will find a Mediterranean to subtropical climate, which is characterized by little precipitation, hot temperatures and mild winters. However, there are regionally different climates here. At the Ionian Sea it is very hot and dry in the summer months, even at night it usually does not get cooler than 20 ° C.
In Reggio Calabria on the west coast of Calabria, temperatures rise to over 20 degrees in April and reach their annual high in July and August at over 30 degrees. The precipitation here often goes to zero. In October, temperatures drop to around 23 degrees, while precipitation increases noticeably. At the end of the year, up to 72 millimeters can be achieved.
When to go to Calabria
The best time to travel to Calabria is the summer months from early June to mid-October. During this time, water temperatures of well over 23 degrees offer ideal conditions for extensive bathing and beach holidays. Long days with up to 11 hours of sunshine flatter the dream region and allow you to enjoy a variety of excursions and activities.
Whether long walks on the beach, hikes and bike tours or relaxing sunbathing – Calabria is a true holiday paradise in summer! The evening hours are also ideal for a cozy end in one of the many cafés and restaurants. If you want to make your vacation a little more active, the autumn and winter months are recommended. Here the temperatures are a little milder and nothing stands in the way of extensive trekking tours.
