The climate of Kathmandu
What is the capital of Nepal? The city of Kathmandu is located in a valley, at an altitude of 1350 meters above sea level and is the capital of the Asian country of Nepal. The one and a half million city is known worldwide for its Buddhist palaces and temples, which mainly attract backpackers. For the mountaineers who climb the peaks in the Himalayas, Kathmandu is usually an important stopover before the actual ascent takes place. The largest (Tibetan) temple in the city is Boudhanath, located in the Boudha district.
Kathmandu has a warm China climate, with dry and relatively warm winters and wet, warm summers, with the southwest monsoon providing relatively much precipitation within a relatively short period of time. The months of July and August are particularly wet, with respectively 360 and 314 millimeters of precipitation (long-term average). The average annual precipitation is 1425 millimeters. The maximum temperature already reaches an average value of around 28 degrees Celsius at the end of April. This will remain so until the end of September, after which the thermometer drops to finally arrive at an average of 18 degrees in the coolest month of January.
