The climate of Kiev

What is the capital of Ukraine? Kiev (officially Kyiv) is the capital and largest city of Ukraine, located on the left and right banks of the Dnieper River. It is an ancient city, there is much doubt about the actual moment when Kiev was founded. According to some sources this would have been as early as the fifth century or even earlier, while the most widely used source speaks of the sixth century AD. The city experienced an important period of prosperity from the ninth to the twelfth century. In this period it was the capital of the East Slavic Empire. The Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Kiev Cave Monastery were built during this period. Both structures are now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Much of the historic center dates back to the 11th century and is particularly well preserved.In modern history, Kiev was the scene of the Orange Revolution in 2004. During this revolution, the inhabitants of the city revolted against the elections and the fraud that had been committed. This revolution would eventually lead to Viktor Yushchenko becoming the prime minister of Ukraine. The football club Dynamo Kiev is the city’s greatest sporting pride and has been one of the top players in European football for years. Kiev has a moderate continental climate, with moderately warm summers and cold winter months. The coldest months are December, January and February. During these months, the mercury will sometimes not rise above zero for weeks. During the day the temperature is just below freezing, while in the evening and night temperatures of minus ten are no exception. Due to the warming of the city, the average daytime temperature in this period will often be 1 or 2 degrees higher than in the sparsely populated areas in the region.
