Climate and Weather in Lisbon, Portugal

The climate of Lisbon

What is the capital of Portugal? Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and is located on the Tagus River (Tejo). The center consists of two parts, a new and an old part. The new part is built on the remains of the old center that was destroyed by an earthquake and tidal wave in 1755. The old part still has the structure of an old town and is therefore very popular with most tourists. In the old part of Belém there are still many beautiful old buildings, including the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém, both of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the center of the old part of Lisbon is the beautiful Praça do Comércio.

The weather is mainly determined by the warm Gulf Stream that Lisbon is located on, so you can expect mild winters and fairly cool summers. Lisbon has a maritime climate, which has slight influences of a Mediterranean climate. The temperatures will never be too extreme, so rarely if ever frost and in summer rarely above 35 degrees. The winter months can be very wet and, together with the occasional wind, this can cause the wind chill to be a bit lower. Because Lisbon is not far from the Atlantic Ocean, the average temperature during the summer months is several degrees lower than in the more inland places. See abbreviations for Lisbon.
