The climate of Managua

What is the capital of Nicaragua? Managua is the capital of the Central American country of Nicaragua. With 1.8 million inhabitants, it is the second largest city in Central America after Guatemala City. Managua is located on Lake Managua and was originally an Indian settlement. In 1819 the city of Leal Villa de Santiago de Managua was founded on this spot, which became the capital of Nicaragua in 1885. Earthquakes and civil wars have meant that the city regularly had to be partly rebuilt and restored. In times of political calm, the risk of natural disasters remains lurking. Managua is located in a region where there is always a risk of earthquakes, such as the disastrous earthquakes that largely destroyed the city in 1931 and 1972.

Managua has a tropical savanna climate (type Aw), with high maximum temperatures all year round, averaging between thirty and thirty-six degrees. In March and April the temperature can rise even further, after which the temperature drops slightly due to the onset of the rainy season. The combination of tropical temperatures and high relative humidity ensures that the perceived temperature is at a high level. On an annual basis, Managua receives almost two thousand millimeters of precipitation, the majority of which is in the period from May to November. During the rainy season, the rainfall is slightly less in July and August, after which September is on average the wettest month, with a long-term average of 404 millimeters.
