Climate and Weather in Mexico City, Mexico
The climate of Mexico City
What is the capital of Mexico? Mexico City (internationally: Mexico City) is the capital of Mexico and also one of the largest cities in the world, with more than twenty million inhabitants. The city is located at an altitude of more than 2000 meters in the Valley of Mexico and is surrounded by volcanoes and mountains. Due to its location, warm air from the city cannot easily escape, which means that it is often considerably warmer in Mexico City, especially in the winter months than in the immediate vicinity. Its location also means that the polluted air around and in the city lingers for a long time and there is often a serious smog problem. Due to the highly polluted air and the higher altitude, people who are not used to this can feel very stuffy, especially people with lung diseases should take these circumstances into account. See abbreviations for Mexico City.
Two seasons
Mexico City has a moderate savanna climate (type Cwb according to the Köppen climate classification system ), with clearly two seasons: a dry season with relatively little precipitation that runs from mid-October to mid-May and a wet period from mid-May/early June to mid-October, in which fairly large amounts of rain can fall regularly. Due to the rain showers, the air clears up a bit and it is rather stuffy because of the higher humidity than because of pollution. Due to the geographical conditions, the southern part of the city is wetter than the northern part.
Temperatures
The temperature differences within a year are not that great. The maximum temperature is between 20 and 30 degrees almost all year round and at night the mercury drops to about 4 to 14 degrees. The highest temperatures are reached in the spring; as soon as the rainy season starts, the temperatures are slightly tempered, especially during the day and the thermometer often hangs around 23 to 25 degrees. Within 24 hours the difference between the minimum and maximum temperatures is on average quite large, the difference between day and night temperatures is on average about 12 to 20 degrees.
In the winter months, light night frost is possible under the influence of cold air currents from the north. Snow is possible on the Mexican highlands, but it rarely snows in Mexico City.
Hurricanes
During hurricane season (June through November), there is a small chance of a hurricane reaching Mexico City. Most hurricanes that reach mainland Mexico, however, dissipate fairly quickly once they make landfall, and if they do reach central Mexico, the hurricane has usually weakened into a tropical storm that mainly provides the necessary rainfall. Apart from nuisance caused by overflowing sewers and crop failures in affected areas, the damage caused by strong winds is virtually always non-existent.
