What is the capital of Tonga? Nuku’alofa is the capital of Tonga, a country made up of 176 islands in the Pacific Ocean. Nuku’alofa has about twenty-five thousand inhabitants and is located on the north coast of Tongatapu Island . Nuku’alofa Bay was not discovered by Europeans until 1777. It was the well-known British Captain James Cook who moored on June 10, 1777, where Nuku’alofa is now. The city has a number of beautiful buildings such as the royal palace, the colonial-style parliament building and the beautifully designed Free Church of Tonga.
