The climate of Porto Novo

What is the capital of Benin? Porto-Novo is officially the capital of the Republic of Benin. Porto-Novo is the second largest city in the African country in terms of size. Nearby Cotonou is larger and in many areas (economically, culturally) more important than Porto-Novo; the government is also located there. The role of Porto-Novo as the capital of the country therefore seems more of a ceremonial role than that the city indeed has the importance that normally applies to a capital. The name Porto-Novo means ‘new port’ in Portuguese. The city was originally developed for the transportation and trade of slaves.
