Climate and Weather in Prague, Czech Republic
The climate of Prague
What is the capital of Czech Republic? Prague (Czech: Praha) is the capital of the Czech Republic and the country’s main tourist destination. Millions of tourists visit this beautiful city on the Vltava River every year, which many consider to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
Prague is located in the province of Central Bohemia and has a temperate continental climate, with characteristics of a maritime climate. For example, the winters are fresh – without getting really cold – and the summers are warm, without periods of prolonged heat. The highest temperature ever recorded in Prague is 37.8 degrees Celsius (in 1983). With an average of just over five hundred millimeters of precipitation on an annual basis, Prague is drier than the French capital Paris , where an average of 600 mm of rain and snow is measured per year. Winter months
Winters in Prague are quite gray and cool. Because the region is surrounded by mountains and hills, the wind force is usually not too bad, so that the perceived temperature is sometimes slightly higher than the actually measured temperature. On a winter day with a few degrees of frost it can therefore still feel quite pleasant. An exception is if there is a heavy high pressure area above the Baltic Sea or Germany, which creates a very strong easterly current that brings very cold air from Russia, accompanied by a fairly strong easterly wind. It is then bleak and cold in Prague and the switch to warmer weather can cause nuisance due to snowfall. This is especially true if the thaw comes in from the west or northwest.
Pleasant summers
In summer Prague is quite sunny, not too wet and pleasantly warm. On many days the daytime temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees. The number of days that it is cooler than twenty degrees is quite limited and sometimes it is tropically warm in the city, with no less than thirty degrees or slightly above. Rain that falls in the summer months is mainly in the form of showers, which are often accompanied by thunderstorms. In the spring, but also in June and July, there can be periods of heavy rainfall for a few days.
