The climate of Stockholm
What is the capital of Sweden? Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and is located in the southeast of this Scandinavian country. With almost a million inhabitants, about one in ten Swedes lives in Stockholm. The metropolitan area of Stockholm even has no fewer than two million inhabitants. The city is made up of fourteen bridged islands, giving Stockholm the nickname “the Venice of the North”. Stockholm is considered one of the best cities in the world to live in. Excellent facilities, a beautifully designed city and low crime make Stockholm very livable. It is not for nothing that it is one of the fastest growing capitals in Europe.Stockholm has a pleasant climate. Warm summers full of sun and pleasant summer temperatures alternate with beautiful springs, a very mild autumn and mild winters for this latitude. Due to its location on the Baltic Sea, Stockholm benefits from a warming effect of the seawater in winter. In spring and summer, the temperatures are slightly tempered by the relatively cool seawater. According to the Köppen climate classification, Stockholm has a temperate maritime climate, type Cfb.In contrast to the southwest coast, Stockholm has much less to do with wind and rain. Since the relative humidity is also low, it feels pleasant for the time of year on a large number of days.During the summer, under the influence of high pressure areas above Scandinavia, the mercury can easily rise to tropical values of around thirty degrees. At 22 degrees in July, the average maximum temperature is about the same as in the south-east of the Netherlands in summer. In winter, it is the same high pressure areas that can cause cold weather. On average, temperatures in winter are around freezing during the day and light frosts at night. Cold periods with moderate to severe frost are also possible. See abbreviations for Stockholm.
