The climate of Tehran

What is the capital of Iran? Tehran, the capital of Iran, is a city with approximately eight million inhabitants in the north of the country. The city’s origins go back thousands of years, but it has only been a few centuries that it has become a serious city. In total, about one fifth of the entire population of Iran lives in Tehran and its suburbs.

Tehran has a cold steppe climate, with hot summers and moderately cool winters. Although the city itself does not reach freezing temperatures, you can ski on a number of slopes close to the city in the winter. In Tehran, which is located on average at an altitude of about 1100 meters above sea level, the mercury is almost always above ‘zero’ in the daytime even in winter and it freezes slightly at night. With 3065 hours of sunshine and 233 millimeters of precipitation on an annual basis, Tehran is quite sunny and dry. Most rain falls in the period from November to April, after which it quickly becomes drier and especially warmer.
