The climate of Vilnius

What is the capital of Lithuania? Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It is found in the southeast of the country. Vilnius has a large historic city center that has a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2009 the capital was even declared one of the European Capitals of Culture. In Vilnius you will find more than forty churches. Much of the city is built in the Baroque style. Vilnius has a rich history since it was founded in the 12th century. The Holocaust and the period after it play a major role in this history. Lithuania’s capital was one of the largest European centers for the Jewish population. Today, there are several museums in Vilnius covering this period, the most famous of which is the Genocide Victim Museum. This museum is located in the former KGB building.

According to the Köppen climate classification, Vilnius has a moderate continental climate. This climate type has fairly cool winters that alternate with moderate summers. Summer is the most ideal season to book a city trip to Vilnius. From June to August it can be between 20 and 23 degrees in the city.
