The climate of Windhoek

What is the capital of Namibia? Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia. Windhoek, with more than three hundred thousand inhabitants, is located at an altitude of approximately 1650 meters above sea level. The name Windhoek is probably a reference to the Windhoek Mountains. The origin of the name is almost certainly Dutch, although this area has not been colonized by the Dutch. However, the Dutch could regularly be found in this area and Namibia was a German colony for several years. After Namibia became independent, Windhoek has been declared the capital of the country. There are still quite a few buildings in the city that remind of the colonial period. The Christ Church is the best example of this. A few kilometers outside of Windhoek is Hosea Kutako International Airport, the country’s largest and most important international airport. Windhoek has a warm desert climate, type BWh according to the Köppen climate classification. It is mild to warm in Windhoek all year round, with the summer months being the warmest with an average of 30 degrees during the day and the winters being a bit cooler at around 20 degrees. In winter, the mercury drops to an average of six to eight degrees at night. However, night frost can occur. The mercury never gets below minus 3 to minus 4 degrees Celsius. In total, Windhoek records an average of 362 millimeters of precipitation per year. This falls almost entirely in the period from October to April. In winter it is almost dry.
