Curaçao Weather and Climate
Geographical location
For a long time Curaçao was the largest Caribbean island in the Dutch Antile and is now a separate state within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Together with the two neighboring islands Aruba and Bonaire, Curaçao belongs to the so-called ABC islands due to the respective first letters and is home to around 150,000 inhabitants on around 440 square kilometers.
As an island under the wind and part of the southern Lesser Antilles, Curaçao already belongs to South America from a geographical point of view, it is about 60 kilometers from the coast of Venezuela.
Curaçao is a comparatively flat Caribbean island, the Sint-Christoffelberg in the northwest of the island forms the highest point in the country at around 375 meters.
Curaçao International Airport (alsoHato International Airport) is located around 10 kilometers northwest of the capital Willemstad and is served by KLM and Air Berlin, among others.
Climate on Curaçao (ABC Islands)
Curaçao is in the immediate area of influence of the so-called northeast trade winds and is still considered a comparatively dry Caribbean island with only a few, irregular rainfall. It is noticeable that there are quite different amounts of precipitation on the ABC islands compared to individual years.
It may well be that a calendar year is extremely dry and more rain falls on the Antilles in the following year. Basically, the travel destination Curaçao convinces with a year-round warm climate, the daytime temperatures are always 29 ° C and more.
Since the north-east trade wind discharges the rain in the Caribbean mainly on the “islands over the wind” in the north-east, there is no real rainy season on Curaçao. At most between mid- Octoberand in mid- December the amount of precipitation increases minimally. Especially nice for vacationers:
Curaçao is not in the risk zone for hurricanes in the Caribbean, so tropical cyclones are usually not an issue. In contrast to many other Caribbean islands, the European summer months are also very pleasant. The sea inspires all year round with warm water temperatures between 26 and 28 ° C.
When to go to Curacao
The Curaçao climate has the special characteristic that the island can be visited almost all year round without hesitation. There are also only minimal temperature differences between winter and summer: the hottest month is September with average daily temperatures of 32.3 degrees, the “coldest” month January has average daily temperatures of 29.2 ° C.
Due to the proximity to the equator, it is permanently warm and sunny in this part of the Caribbean. Our travel experts like to refer to the months of January to May as the best time to travel to Curaçao, as during this time a light wind ensures a slight, pleasant cooling and at the same time very little rain falls.
In addition, there are almost no mosquitoes on the island in spring, but nature is rather dry during this period. December is considered the best travel time for nature lovers. Nevertheless, we can actually recommend the whole year to our readers as a travel time for Curaçao, as every season has its advantages.
