El Gouna, Egypt Weather and Climate
General & Geographical Location
El Gouna (occasionally also el-Guna) is a holiday resort around 25 kilometers above Hurghada on the Red Sea in Egypt.
It is one of the most important tourism projects in all of Africa, as El Gouna has been developed into a real model city by the entrepreneur and billionaire Samih Sawiris (Orascom) since 1989.
El Gouna – translated: the lagoon – was built around an existing network of waterways and has the most modern infrastructure in Egypt. Today El Gouna consists of breathtaking villas, 15 high-class hotels under international management (including Steigenberger and Mövenpick), two modern marinas, a hospital and golf courses.
There is even a campus of the Technical University of Berlin in El Gouna, whose security is not only ensured by the state police but also by a well-equipped private security service on all access roads.
El Gouna is more reminiscent of St. Tropez than you think you are in Egypt. But it is precisely this modern, western attitude towards life that makes the city so extraordinarily attractive, even in difficult times.
The journey is easy via the international airport of Hurghada, the transfer time is then about 30 to 40 minutes.
Climate in El Gouna
El Gouna, like neighboring Hurghada, has a desert climate that can be described as subtropical and is characterized above all by a very dry and hot summer. Between June and August in particular, the thermometer reaches the 35 degree mark almost every day, and hot spells are not uncommon in midsummer.
Nevertheless, the values are usually bearable, as there is only a low level of humidity and there is usually a pleasant breeze from the Red Sea. In addition, the night temperatures usually cool down by around 10 degrees and are therefore ideal for ending the evenings in the open air.
Even in the so-called winter, El Gouna recorded almost no significant rainfall. Until the November it remains pleasantly summery, only between December and March it cools down noticeably. Especially at night, only around 10 degrees are reached, so the values are roughly comparable to the German spring.
When is the best time to visit El Gouna?
El Gouna is generally suitable for a holiday all year round, as it offers a wide range of high-class hotels and varied activities. The main tourist season is – as almost everywhere – the months of summer holidays in July and August.
However, the enormous heat during the day can be perceived as too high for some holidaymakers. In our opinion, those who are not dependent on the school holidays will find the best conditions immediately before and after. We therefore recommend April to June and September to November as the best travel time in El Gouna.
However, we would like to point out once again that this is an assessment of the objectively absolute best travel time and of course fantastic holidays on the Red Sea in Egypt are also possible in other months (e.g. in March) or in midsummer.

Sights and excursions
Since El Gouna is a modern planned city, there are logically no ancient Egyptian sites or sights in the local area. However, El Gouna is rich in activities and excursions. There are bathing opportunities both on the lagoon and on the beaches directly on the Red Sea.
The best spots for kitesurfers are available directly at the Mövenpick Hotel and at the main Mangroovy Beach spot a little north of the center. They offer the most modern kite centers, a long gently sloping sandy beach and huge standing areas with ideal shallow water conditions.
On days with no wind, the El Gouna Cable Park attracts sliders. Worthwhile excursions for non-kiters are, in addition to a lagoon boat tour, above all snorkeling and diving trips, which are often accompanied by dolphins. Horse riding excursions, Segway tours and quad safaris are also right at the top of the popularity list.
The nightlife of El Gouna mainly takes place at the Abu Tig Marina, whose bars and restaurants sometimes turn into very stylish and unobtrusive locations with live music and DJs at late hours. In any case, the marina is the perfect place to “stroll” from morning to night.
