Fuerteventura, Canary Islands Weather and Climate

Geographical location

The Spanish island of Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean after Tenerife and has around 110,000 inhabitants.

The popular holiday island is located around 122 kilometers west of Morocco and, due to its climatic conditions, is not only popular with beach holidaymakers.

Since 1860, today’s Puerto del Rosario (formerly Puerto de Cabras) with around 40,000 inhabitants has been the capital of Fuerteventura. Politically, the Canary Islands belong to Spain, but with their two provinces they have the status of an autonomous region.

Fuerteventura belongs to the province of “Las Palmas” with Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, while the Canary Islands Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma belong to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Climate in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is also known as the “island of eternal spring” because it is pleasantly warm all year round and the weather is very balanced. In contrast to other holiday destinations in the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is very dry, with only around 150mm of rainfall during the year.

Rain can only be expected in the winter months, but even then there are rare short showers. The weather is usually sunny with averages between 17 and 26 ° C, whereby the maximum daily temperatures in summer can also exceed 30 degrees.

The water temperatures are between 19 and 23 degrees. The special climate on Fuerteventura is caused by the so-called Canary Current (a moderately warm Atlantic current) and the continuous north-east trade wind. The humidity is usually pleasantly low.

In midsummer, the climatic phenomenon calima (a desert wind) can also bring record temperatures above 38 ° C for a short time, but these extremes only last for a few days.

When is it warm on Fuerteventura?

There are no seasons on Fuerteventura in the classic sense, which is why the Canary Island is suitable as a holiday destination all year round. Even in winter it remains pleasantly mild with daytime temperatures of around 20 degrees, only the time between sunrise and sunset is now significantly reduced compared to summer (see duration of sunshine / climate table).

The island is not only popular with beach holidaymakers in the summer months, but is also one of the best places in Europe for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Optimal conditions prevail in the period from late May to early November, especially from July to October can be described as the best travel time on Fuerteventura. Due to the warm, long summer days, the Atlantic Ocean is warmest in September and October with a water temperature of 23 to 24 degrees.

Those who prefer to take a more relaxed or active approach can, however, switch to the off-season without hesitation. Especially for walks on the beach, hikes and excursions to the highlights of the island, the winter months with mostly sunny weather and mild temperatures are definitely a suitable travel time.

If you don’t want to chase through the waves yourself, you can watch the water sports enthusiasts doing their tricks in La Pared, for example. All surf schools make sure that surfers and bathers do not “get in each other’s way” even on popular beaches – safety is a top priority on the Canary Islands.

The inland of Fuerteventura is quite sparse and sparsely populated compared to the neighboring islands, the main attraction are undoubtedly the long, dreamy beaches. A visit to the dunes of Corralejo is just as popular as the steep coasts in the west of the island (e.g. Ajuy) and the fishing village of Morro Jable.

The archaeological site “La Atalayita” reveals the secrets of the Mahos who lived in Fuerteventura in the 15th century. Our recommendations for excursions: Boat tour with FuerteCharter or Ocean People, visit to Oasis Park Fuerteventura and off-road tour, e.g. from Cross Island.
