Khao Lak, Thailand Weather and Climate

General and geography

Khao Lak is still a kind of insider tip for Thailand travelers, because the comparatively quiet and high-class holiday region is often overshadowed by the tourist center in Phuket which is around 60 kilometers away.

But this is by no means a disadvantage, because Khao Lak in the south of Thailand directly on the Andaman Sea scores with fantastic hotel resorts, dreamy beaches and a very stylish environment. Instead of wild parties, Khao Lak mainly offers pleasant relaxation and moments of pleasure.

We do not want to hide the fact that Khao Lak, together with the island of Koh Phi Phi, was probably the most severely affected region of the tsunami in 2004. The endless hard work and courage of the locals as well as the great international support have not only allowed Khao Lak to resurrect. Rather, Khao Lak shines much more beautifully today than before the large-scale destruction.

There are no longer any impairments for vacationers, the region and the fantastic landscape around it has recovered perfectly. Extensive protective measures and early warning systems also ensure that a comparable catastrophe is no longer possible in the future.

The journey to Khao Lak is via the airport of Phuket. The transfer time (by bus, van or taxi) is around 1.5 to 2 hours via well-developed roads.

Climate in Khao Lak

Khao Lak is located in southern Thailand and therefore has a humid tropical climate. This is characterized by year-round high temperatures with only very small fluctuations. There are no classic seasons in Thailand, the Khao Lak region is rather characterized by the dry season and rainy season.

With the change of monsoons, the humidity rises sharply in the course of April and initiates a pronounced rainy season in Khao Lak until around mid- November. Often it is already clearing up by the end of October, but statistically October even records the highest amounts of precipitation of the whole year.

The dry season in Khao Lak not only means a significant increase in the number of hours of sunshine, but is also associated with significantly less humidity. The climate in the region is then perceived as particularly pleasant and is particularly suitable for us Europeans for a vacation in Thailand.

When is the best time to go to Khao Lak?

As described, the dry season in the region begins in November, while heavy rains arrive at the beginning of May. We therefore recommend the time from mid-November to the end of April as the best travel time for Khao Lak. The climatic conditions between Christmas and Easter are particularly ideal.

Thailand is particularly popular as a travel destination during the European Christmas holidays. During this high season, the prices for flights and hotels are therefore particularly high. Those who are not dependent on the school holidays will find the best weather conditions at the beginning of March at significantly lower prices.
