La Gomera, Canary Islands Weather and Climate
Geographical location
La Gomera is located in the Atlantic Ocean and belongs to the Canary Islands. With a population of almost 20,000 people and an area of approx. 370 km², it is significantly smaller than its neighboring islands of La Palma and Tenerife. Of the seven main islands in the Canary Islands, only El Hierro is smaller in area than La Gomera.
The main town is San Sebastian de La Gomera. The distance to the Spanish mainland is 1300 kilometers, around 300 kilometers to the African mainland. The highest mountain on the island is the Garajonay, whose associated nature reserve makes up around ten percent of the island.
Like all Canary Islands, La Gomera is of volcanic origin and consists mainly of old lava, rock and tuff. The flora of the island is quite varied and sometimes differs significantly depending on the altitude.
In the center of La Gomera lies the Garajonay National Park with a dense cloud forest that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
So far there are no direct flights from Germany, so you usually have to travel via Tenerife. The distance from Frankfurt to La Gomera is around 3,300 kilometers as the crow flies.
Climate on La Gomera
On La Gomera, as on the other Canary Islands, there is a very mild climate. Every year La Gomera has more than 2900 hours of sunshine, so that the annual average temperature is between a pleasant 18 and 25 ° C. It is not for nothing that the Canary Islands are considered the place with the greatest number of hours of sunshine in Europe. The maximum temperatures in summer are 29 degrees, at night they only drop below 17 degrees in January and February.
The mild evenings in particular are ideal for exploring beautiful restaurants and beach bars. In the months of January to April the sea hardly cools down, so you can find great bathing temperatures almost all year round. The month with the most precipitation of the year is the December, when it can come to rain of up to 27 millimeters.
When to go to La Gomera?
The best travel time for La Gomera is from July to November. In the spring months of March, April and May the temperatures start to rise to 23 to 25 degrees, this is where the bathing season on the beautiful Canary Island begins. The northern regions of the island, however, are more suitable for hiking and trekking. The many hiking routes lead through a breathtaking landscape, for example in the Garajonay National Park.
In these months you have the perfect conditions for extensive hiking tours. Even in autumn the temperatures are still pleasant, but the probability of precipitation is a little higher than in spring. However, you should definitely have warmer clothes in your luggage, as it could get colder in the mountains.
For vacationers who want to enjoy the sun, the best travel time from July to October is of course ideal. Nothing stands in the way of extensive sunbathing and bathing.
