It is bordered by Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, Iran to the south, and Turkey to the west. Armenia’s climate is primarily continental with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature ranges from -10°C (14°F) in January to 20°C (68°F) in July. Rainfall occurs mainly between May and October while snowfall occurs mainly between November and April in most parts of Armenia. Severe weather conditions are common in winter months due to strong winds that bring cold air from Russia. The capital city of Yerevan lies in the heart of Armenia at an elevation of 1,090 meters (3,580 feet). Yerevan has a population of over one million people and is known for its unique architecture combining traditional Armenian styles with modern elements. Other major cities include Gyumri which lies in northwestern Armenia near the Turkish border and Vanadzor which lies on the banks of river Debed in northern Armenia near Georgia.
