It is located in the Persian Gulf near Saudi Arabia and Qatar, with a coastline of 161 kilometers. Bahrain Island is relatively flat with its highest point being only 122 meters above sea level. The climate of Bahrain is mostly hot and arid, with temperatures ranging from 18-45 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Rainfall is scarce and irregular, with an average annual rainfall of only 80 millimeters. The terrain of Bahrain consists mainly of desert plains and low hills, although much of the land has been reclaimed from the sea through desalination projects over the years. These projects have created fertile agricultural areas in areas where once there was only desert sand. The capital city Manama lies on the northeast coast and has grown to become one of the most important cities in the region due to its large oil reserves as well as its strategic location near major shipping routes in the Persian Gulf. Other important cities include Muharraq, Isa Town and Riffa. There are also several smaller villages scattered throughout Bahrain’s islands that are worth visiting for their unique culture and history. See bridgat for weather information in Bahrain.
