According to wholevehicles, Benin is a small West African country located on the Gulf of Guinea. It borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. It has a total area of 112,620 square kilometers, making it slightly larger than Pennsylvania. Benin’s terrain is mostly flat with some hills in the north and northwest region of the country. The coastline is low-lying with extensive lagoons and marshes along its length. The terrain gradually rises towards the north where it meets the Atakora Mountains which form a barrier between Benin and its northern neighbors. The country has two main rivers – the Ouémé River in the south and the Mono River in the east which both flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Benin has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons throughout most of the year. The wet season runs from April to July while August to October are considered dry months. During this time temperatures can reach as high as 40°C (104°F). The cooler dry season from November to March sees temperatures drop to an average of 25°C (77°F). Despite being located close to the equator, Benin experiences relatively mild temperatures due to its location close to large bodies of water like lakes, rivers and lagoons which help moderate temperatures year round. The population of Benin is estimated at about 11 million people with most living in rural areas or small villages throughout the country. French is spoken as an official language although many local languages such as Fon, Bariba, Yoruba and Dendi are also spoken by smaller populations throughout Benin’s diverse regions.
