It has a total area of 51,100 square kilometers and its coastline stretches for 1,290 kilometers. In the central valley region it experiences a mild climate year-round with temperatures ranging from 16°C to 25°C (61°F – 77°F). The Caribbean coast is hot and humid while the Pacific coast has a dry season from December to April and a wet season from May to November. There are also areas of tropical rainforest in Costa Rica that experience high levels of rainfall throughout the year. In addition to its impressive geography, Costa Rica also has an incredible array of wildlife species living within its borders. It is home to 5% of the world’s biodiversity which includes over 500,000 species of plants and animals that live in both terrestrial and marine habitats. This includes some endangered species like jaguars and leatherback turtles as well as some endemic species such as quetzals, sloths and poison dart frogs.
