It is bordered by Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the south, and Montenegro to the southeast. Croatia also has a long coastline along the Adriatic Sea in the southwest. Croatia has a total land area of 56,594 km2 (21,851 mi2), making it slightly larger than West Virginia. The terrain is mostly mountainous and hilly with plains along its coasts and rivers. The highest point in Croatia is Dinara Peak at 1,831 m (6,007 ft). The majority of Croatia’s population lives in urban areas along its coastlines or near rivers such as Sava, Drava, Korana and Kupa. Croatia is divided into 20 counties which are further divided into cities and municipalities. The capital city of Zagreb is located in central Croatia near Sava River. Other major cities include Split on Dalmatian Coastline and Dubrovnik on Adriatic Coastline. In addition to these cities there are many smaller towns scattered throughout Croatia’s rural areas as well as numerous islands off its coastlines that attract tourists from all over Europe during summer months. The climate of Croatia varies from temperate continental climate on mainland to subtropical climate on its coastlines with hot summers and mild winters due to its proximity to Mediterranean Sea. Annual precipitation varies from region to region but generally ranges between 700-1,200 mm (27-47 inches). Snowfall can occur during winter months but it usually melts quickly due to sunshine hours throughout year averaging around 2200 hours annually which makes it one of sunniest countries in Europe.
