It is situated between the French islands of Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. Dominica has an area of approximately 750 square kilometers (290 square miles) and a coastline that stretches for about 148 kilometers (92 miles). The island features a rugged terrain with steep mountains, lush rainforests, and numerous waterfalls. The highest point on the island is Morne Diablotins, which stands at 1,447 meters (4,747 feet) above sea level. Dominica’s tropical climate consists of two distinct seasons: a dry season from December to May and a wet season from June to November. The average temperature ranges between 24 and 29 degrees Celsius (75 – 84 degrees Fahrenheit). The island’s diverse geography gives rise to its many unique ecosystems. Its forests are home to species such as green iguanas, parrots, boa constrictors, jaguars, mongooses, agoutis, armadillos and tamanduas. In addition to its wildlife diversity on land, Dominica also has an abundance of marine life in its coral reefs and mangrove swamps. Some of these include parrotfish, snappers, angelfish, lobsters and sea turtles. There are also over 200 species of birds on the island including hummingbirds and parrots. Dominica’s geography also creates some spectacular landscapes that draw tourists from all over the world each year.
