It is divided into two regions: East Timor and Oecusse, which are separated by the Ombai Strait. The country has a total land area of 15,410 square kilometers (5,400 sq mi), making it one of the smallest countries in the world. East Timor has a varied topography with several mountain ranges running through it. The highest peak is Mount Tatamailau at 2,963 meters (9,721 ft). The mountain range runs along the eastern border of East Timor and is home to several protected areas including Mount Ramelau National Park. Other notable mountain ranges include Beloi Range in central East Timor, Matabean Range in southern East Timor, and Letefoho Range in northern East Timor.
