According to wholevehicles, El Salvador is located in Central America, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Caribbean Sea to the north. It shares a border with Guatemala to the west and Honduras to the east. The country is divided into 14 departments, each with its own unique geography. The northernmost region of El Salvador is home to lush rainforests, while much of the rest of the country is characterized by rugged mountains and volcanoes. El Salvador’s highest peak, Cerro El Pital, stands at 8,957 feet (2,730 meters) above sea level and can be found in the central highlands. The mountain range also contains two active volcanoes – San Miguel Volcano and Izalco Volcano – as well as a number of crater lakes that are popular tourist attractions. The western part of El Salvador is dominated by mangrove swamps along its coastline as well as low-lying plains that stretch from its border with Guatemala all the way up to Lake Güija. This lake is one of El Salvador’s most important bodies of water, providing a source for many rivers such as Lempa River and Torola River that run through various parts of the country. Further east lies Lake Ilopango – a large volcanic crater lake that was once home to an ancient Mayan city – and Lake Coatepeque which has become a popular destination for swimming and fishing. El Salvador’s easternmost region consists mainly of dry coastal plains known as La Costa del Bálsamo which are punctuated by small hills and valleys that provide some relief from otherwise arid conditions. This region also features several small islands such as Meanguera Island which sits off El Salvador’s southern coast in Gulfo de Fonseca. In addition to its natural beauty, this area also boasts some impressive archaeological sites such as Joya de Cerén – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – which offers visitors insight into how pre-Columbian cultures lived in this region centuries ago.
