It has a total area of 28,051 square kilometers and is bordered by Cameroon to the north, Gabon to the east and south, and the Gulf of Guinea to the west. The country is divided into two distinct parts: mainland Río Muni and the island of Bioko, where the capital city Malabo is located. The mainland region consists largely of dense tropical rainforest with some savanna grasslands in its more hilly areas. Its highest point is Pico Basile at 3,008 meters above sea level. Bioko Island is mostly volcanic in origin with steep hillsides covered in lush vegetation. The island’s highest peak, Pico Santa Isabel, stands at 3,007 meters above sea level. Both regions have a hot and humid climate with an average annual temperature of 27°C and an average yearly rainfall ranging from 1,000-3,000 mm depending on location.
