According to wholevehicles, Eritrea is located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. The Red Sea lies to the northeast of Eritrea, with its coastline stretching along some 1,000 kilometers. The country is dominated by rugged terrain, with an average elevation of around 2,000 meters above sea level. It is mostly composed of highlands and a coastal plain that stretches along the entire length of its coastline. The highlands are divided into two distinct regions: the Western Highlands and Eastern Highlands. The Western Highlands are characterized by their steep slopes and deep valleys that separate them from each other. This region also contains some of Eritrea’s highest mountains including Emba Soira which stands at 3015 meters above sea level. The Eastern Highlands are comprised mostly of flat-topped plateaus and mesas, as well as a few isolated peaks. These plateaus are intersected by several rivers including Gash River and Barka River, which eventually drain into Red Sea Gulfs such as Massawa Gulf and Dahlak Gulf. The coastal plain is relatively narrow compared to the rest of Eritrea’s geography; it stretches from north to south for about 80 miles from Massawa in the north to Assab in the south. This region is largely arid due to its proximity to desert climates but does contain some irrigated lands along certain parts of its coast where agriculture can be practiced. Eritrea also has several islands located just off its coast; these include Dahlak Archipelago and Hanish Islands which consist mainly of coral reefs and sandbanks that provide important habitats for various species of birds and marine life. The climate in most parts of Eritrea is semi-arid or arid with hot summers and mild winters due to its location within a desert climate zone; however temperatures can vary significantly depending on elevation with higher elevations experiencing cooler temperatures year round than lower elevations closer to sea level or within desert climates areas such as Assab or Massawa respectively.
