According to wholevehicles, the geography of Guatemala is incredibly diverse, featuring everything from tropical rainforest to high-altitude mountains. The country is located in Central America and bordered by Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. It has a total area of 108,890 square kilometers and a population of approximately 17 million. Guatemala’s terrain is mostly mountainous, with the Sierra Madre de Chiapas mountain range running through the country from east to west. This range includes Guatemala’s highest point, Tajumulco Volcano at 4,220 meters above sea level. In the north and northwest of the country are lowland plains that make up most of the agricultural land in Guatemala. The south and southwest are dominated by tropical rainforest which is home to many species of wildlife including monkeys and jaguars. The climate in Guatemala varies depending on location but generally falls into two categories: temperate or tropical. The central highlands have a cool temperate climate while the Pacific Coast has a warm humid climate due to its proximity to the ocean. Rainfall also varies depending on location; while some areas receive up to 2200 mm per year, others may only receive 500 mm per year or less. Guatemala’s rivers are important for both drinking water as well as hydroelectric power generation; most notably is Rio Motagua which runs through much of eastern Guatemala before emptying into the Caribbean Sea. Lake Atitlan is another significant body of water located in southwestern Guatemala; it is renowned for its deep blue waters surrounded by volcanoes rising from its shores.
