The country is bordered to the north by the Caribbean Sea, to the south by El Salvador and Nicaragua, to the east by the Gulf of Honduras and to the west by Guatemala. The country’s terrain consists of mountains, valleys, plains and coastal lowlands. The highest point in Honduras is Cerro Las Minas which stands at 8,957 feet above sea level. The northern coast of Honduras has numerous islands including Roatan and Utila which are popular tourist destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling. Inland there are several mountain ranges that run along the length of the country including Sierra de Agalta, Sierra de Omoa and Sierra de Yoro. The central region of Honduras is made up of valleys with small rivers running through them while in western Honduras there are numerous rainforests. One of these forests is Pico Bonito National Park where visitors can explore its trails, rivers and waterfalls as well as spot wildlife like jaguars, tapirs and howler monkeys.
