The terrain of Ireland consists mainly of low mountains and rolling hills with some coastal plains. The highest point in Ireland is Carrauntoohil, located in County Kerry at 1,041 meters (3,414 feet). The coastlines are mostly rocky with many small bays and headlands. The longest river in Ireland is the River Shannon which flows for 360 kilometers (224 miles). There are numerous lakes throughout Ireland including Lough Neagh which is the largest lake in the British Isles. The climate of Ireland is temperate maritime with mild winters and cool summers. Average temperatures range from 6°C (43°F) in January to 16°C (61°F) in July. Rainfall varies across the country but generally ranges from 700-1500 millimeters per year. Snowfall occurs mainly in winter months but can sometimes occur during other seasons as well. Ireland has a rich biodiversity with many species of plants and animals that can only be found there. Some of these include Irish hares, red deer, badgers, pine martens, stoats, foxes and hedgehogs as well as a variety of birds such as choughs, golden plovers and gannets.
