According to wholevehicles, Japan is an archipelago of over 6,800 islands located off the coast of East Asia. It stretches from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The country’s four main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The Ryukyu Islands, which include Okinawa, are also part of Japan. The landmass covers an area of about 145,925 square miles (377,873 square kilometers). Much of Japan is mountainous and heavily forested. The highest peak is Mount Fuji at 12,388 feet (3,776 meters) tall. Other popular mountains include Mount Haku in central Honshu and Mount Yari in northern Honshu. There are several active volcanoes located around Japan as well; Mount Aso on Kyushu Island is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world. The climate across Japan varies greatly due to its long shape and location between two seas. In general it has a temperate climate with mild winters and hot summers with high humidity levels throughout most parts of the country. Precipitation is fairly consistent year-round but can be heavier during certain times such as spring and summer when typhoons often hit Japan’s coasts bringing heavy rains along with them. Japan consists mostly of plains along its coastline which makes up about 16 percent of its total land area; however much of this land has been developed for agriculture or urban areas due to its flat terrain making it ideal for human habitation. There are also numerous rivers that flow through the country which provide water for agriculture and industry as well as recreational activities such as white water rafting or fishing trips. Additionally there are many lakes located throughout Japan that were formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago providing stunning scenery for tourists visiting from around the world.
