According to wholevehicles, Laos is a landlocked country located in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by Thailand to the west and northwest, Cambodia to the south, Vietnam to the east, and China to the north. The terrain of Laos is mostly rugged mountains with some plains and plateaus. The highest point in Laos is Phou Bia at 2,817 meters above sea level. The majority of the country consists of mountainous terrain, making it one of the most challenging countries in Southeast Asia for transportation infrastructure. The Mekong River forms a large part of the western border between Laos and Thailand and also runs through much of central Laos. It is joined by several tributaries, including the Nam Ngum River which runs through Vientiane. These rivers provide vital transportation links for goods and people throughout Laos as well as provide fish for local consumption. The major cities along the Mekong River are Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Thakek, Pakse and Savannakhet. In addition to these cities there are numerous smaller towns scattered throughout the country that serve as important trading centers for local communities. The climate in Laos varies depending on region but generally tends towards tropical monsoons with hot wet summers and cooler dry winters with temperatures ranging from 15°C-35°C (59°F-95°F). Rainfall varies greatly depending on location but most areas receive between 1,000-2,000mm per year with some areas receiving up to 3,000mm annually during monsoon season from May-October. Due to its mountainous terrain there are many different ecosystems throughout Laos from tropical rainforest in southern regions to temperate forests in northern regions near China’s Yunnan province. Overall Laos has a varied geography that is both beautiful and challenging at times due its rugged terrain making it an interesting destination for travelers looking to explore this part of Southeast Asia.
