Lithuania also has over 3,000 lakes scattered across its territory. The most well-known lake in Lithuania is Lake Vištytis which is located near Druskininkai town. The climate in Lithuania varies depending on the region. The southern part of Lithuania has a more continental climate while the northern part has more maritime climate with milder winters and cooler summers than other parts of Lithuania. The average temperature ranges from -4 degrees Celsius (25 degrees Fahrenheit) during winter months to +18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit) during summer months. Rainfall averages around 600mm per year throughout most parts of Lithuania with some areas receiving up to 1,000mm annually. Lithuania also has many protected areas including national parks such as Aukštaitija National Park which was established in 1974 and covers an area of 830 square kilometers (320 square miles). There are also several nature reserves such as Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve located near Palanga city on the coast of Baltic Sea which was established in 1992 and covers an area of 1,200 hectares (2,965 acres).
