The terrain of Myanmar ranges from coastal plains in the south to the mountains of the Himalayas in the north. The highest mountain peak is Hkakabo Razi at 5881 meters (19295 feet). In between these two extremes are lush forests and wide rivers such as the Irrawaddy River which flows through the entire country from north to south. The climate in Myanmar is tropical monsoon with three distinct seasons: hot dry season from March to May; rainy season from June to October; cool dry season from November to February. Annual precipitation averages between 1000-1500mm (39-59 inches) depending on location within the country. Myanmar has a wealth of natural resources including petroleum reserves; natural gas reserves; timber; tin; antimony; zinc; copper; tungsten ore; lead ore; coal; marble and limestone. A variety of minerals are also found throughout the country such as gold, silver and rubies as well as jadeite deposits near Mandalay which produce some of the world’s finest quality jadeite stones for jewelry making.
