The highest point in North Korea is Paektu Mountain at 2,744 meters above sea level. The climate of North Korea ranges from temperate in the south to subarctic in the north. The average annual temperature is 11°C (52°F). The country receives an average of 1,400 millimeters of rainfall each year. The country’s main rivers are the Daedong River, Imjin River and Yalu River. These rivers provide irrigation for agricultural production and are used for fishing and transportation as well. There are numerous lakes throughout North Korea; some of these include Lake Chonji on Mt Paektu and Taehwa Lake near Pyongyang. North Korea has a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its diverse geography and climate conditions. Common trees found in North Korea include pine, oak, elm and willow trees while animals such as tigers, bears, lynx, deer, wild boar can be found living in their natural habitats throughout the country’s many forests. Additionally there are several species of migratory bird that make their way through North Korean airspace during different times of year such as cranes and geese during autumn migration season or swans during springtime migration season.
