It has a total area of 88,361 square kilometers (34,116 square miles) making it slightly larger than South Carolina. The terrain of Serbia is mostly composed of hills and mountains that are interspersed with plains along its border with Hungary. The highest point in Serbia is Midžor at 2169 meters (7116 feet). Rivers such as Danube, Sava, Tisa, Morava, Drina flow through Serbia from its northern border with Hungary towards its southern border with Bulgaria. Serbia has a continental climate characterized by cold winters with temperatures falling below 0°C (32°F) in January and hot summers with temperatures rising above 30°C (86°F) in July. Rainfall varies depending on location but generally increases from south to north. Average annual precipitation ranges from 500 mm (19.7 inches) along its southern border to 1100 mm (43 inches) along its northern border. The country experiences periods of drought during summer months due to low rainfall levels coupled with high temperatures. Serbia’s landscape is rich in natural resources such as coal, iron ore, limestone, oil shale and bauxite which are found mainly in Vojvodina region located in the northern part of the country. Other natural resources include copper ore which is found near Bor town while gold deposits are found near Aleksinac town both located in central Serbia.
