According to wholevehicles, Slovakia is located in Central Europe and is bordered by five other countries; Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic. The country has a total area of 18,932 square miles and its terrain is mostly mountainous with lowlands in the south and east. The highest peak in Slovakia is Gerlachovský štít at 8,711 feet above sea level. The country has a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters. The majority of the country experiences an average temperature range from 4 to 16 degrees Celsius with higher temperatures in the south. Slovakia has a diverse range of ecosystems including mountains, hills, plains and lowlands as well as forests, meadows and rivers. Forests cover nearly 40% of the land while agricultural land covers another 31%. The majority of Slovakia’s population lives in urban areas such as Bratislava which is the capital city. Other major cities include Košice, Prešov, Žilina and Banská Bystrica. Slovakia’s population density stands at around 110 people per square kilometer making it one of the least densely populated countries in Europe. Slovakia also has an abundance of natural resources such as minerals like lignite coal, iron ore, copper ores and uranium ore; various types of stone; oil shale; natural gas; timber; water resources; fish stocks; hydroelectric power potential; fertile soils for agriculture production; limestone for cement production and many others. These resources are managed by several organizations such as the Ministry of Environment or Slovak Environmental Agency which are responsible for ensuring that these resources are used responsibly to protect Slovakia’s environment from any harm caused by over-exploitation or pollution.
