The country is mostly desert with some fertile land along the coast. The Euphrates River runs through eastern Syria and empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Syria also has several mountain ranges including the Golan Heights in the south and Mount Hermon in the northeast. In addition to its mountainous regions, Syria also has several major lakes such as Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee) in the north and Lake Assad near Aleppo in the northeast.
