According to wholevehicles, Tajikistan is located in Central Asia, bordered by Kyrgyzstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Afghanistan to the south and China to the east. The country covers a total area of 143,100 square kilometres, making it slightly smaller than the size of Wisconsin. The terrain is mostly mountainous with over ninety percent of its land lying above 1,500 meters in elevation. The highest point is Mount Communism at 7,495 meters and is located on the border with Kyrgyzstan. The Pamir Mountains are located in the eastern part of Tajikistan and are home to many glaciers including Fedchenko Glacier which is the world’s largest non-polar glacier. Other mountain ranges like Zeravshan Range are located in western Tajikistan and host many high altitude lakes such as Iskanderkul Lake which lies at an altitude of 2195 meters. The majority of Tajikistan’s population lives in rural areas while much of its capital city Dushanbe remains underdeveloped due to its remoteness from other urban centers. The area also has a semiarid climate with hot summers and mild winters that vary greatly depending on elevation; temperatures can range from -10°C (14°F) at higher elevations up to 40°C (104°F) in some lower lying areas. Rainfall varies greatly across Tajikistan but generally increases with elevation; most precipitation falls during springtime when snowmelt from higher elevations contributes significantly to runoff into rivers and streams. These waterways provide vital resources for agriculture as well as transportation routes for people living in remote areas of Tajikistan. In addition, these rivers also allow for hydroelectric power generation which has become an important source of energy for many rural communities throughout Tajikistan.
