According to wholevehicles, Turkmenistan is located in the south-eastern part of Central Asia, and is bordered by Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and the Caspian Sea. It has an area of 488,100 sq km and a population of 5.9 million people. The terrain is mostly flat-to-rolling sand dunes with some mountains in the south. The country has a long coastline of 1,768 km on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. The climate of Turkmenistan is mostly dry and continental with hot summers and mild winters. The capital city Ashgabat is located in the southwest corner of the country at an elevation of about 500 m above sea level. It experiences very hot summers with temperatures often reaching over 40°C (104°F). Winters are milder but still cold enough for snowfall to occur occasionally throughout December to February. The two main rivers within Turkmenistan are Amu Darya and Tedzhen (or Hari Rud). These rivers provide much needed water for agriculture as well as providing habitats for fish species such as carp, sturgeon, catfish and salmonids which are important to local fisheries. Other important rivers include Sarykamysh River which flows into Lake Sarykamysh near Mary City in eastern Turkmenistan; and Murgab River which flows north through western Turkmenistan into Uzbekistan where it joins other rivers that eventually drain into the Aral Sea. Much of Turkmenistan’s landscape consists of desert plains covered by sand dunes or steppes covered by grasslands. There are also some areas with swamps or salt marshes due to its proximity to the Caspian Sea. In addition to this there are several mountain ranges located within Turkmenistan such as Kopet Dag Range along its eastern border with Iran; Kugitangtau Mountains near Mary City; Gorgan Mountains near Dashoguz; Garabil Range near Ashgabat; Karakum Desert across much of central Turkmenistan; Balkan Mountains near Chardzhou; and Ustyurt Plateau stretching from Kazakhstan through western Uzbekistan into northern Turkmenistan bordering onto Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region along its western border with that country.
