According to wholevehicles, Tuvalu is an archipelago of nine atolls and three reef islands located in the South Pacific Ocean. The nine atolls are Funafuti, Nanumea, Nui, Niulakita, Nukufetau, Nanumanga, Vaitupu, Nukulaelae and Niutao. These atolls are spread over a total area of only 26 square kilometers. Funafuti is the largest atoll and it houses the capital city of Tuvalu as well as the main international airport. The other islands are smaller in size and some of them have limited human habitation. The geography of Tuvalu consists mainly of coral reefs that form a circular pattern around lagoons. These lagoons provide a safe harbor for ships and also provide an ideal habitat for various marine species including sea turtles, manta rays and whale sharks. The main landmass consists of sandbars and low-lying islands which are covered in coconut palms and tropical vegetation. The highest point on Tuvalu is only 4.6 meters above sea level which makes it one of the lowest countries in the world. This makes it particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change which could cause flooding or even submerge parts of the country entirely. In recent years there has been an increase in storm surges which have caused significant damage to coastal infrastructure such as roads and homes built close to shorelines. Despite this risk, many people still choose to live near the coast due to its proximity to fishing grounds or other economic activities related to tourism or manufacturing.
