According to wholevehicles, United States is the fourth-largest country in the world by total area and the third-largest by population. It is made up of fifty states and a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions. The geography of the United States varies greatly across its expansive area. The East Coast of the United States is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and includes a variety of climates including humid subtropical, tropical, and temperate maritime climates. The central part of the country is home to the Great Plains region, which stretches from Canada to Mexico across several states. This area is characterized by flat or rolling terrain with occasional mountains and hills. To the west lies the Rocky Mountain region which includes mountain ranges such as The Rockies and Sierra Nevada in California as well as numerous national parks. Further west are desert regions such as Death Valley in California and Nevada’s Great Basin Desert. The Pacific Coast features a diverse climate ranging from temperate rain forests in Washington State to Mediterranean climates in California, while Alaska has subarctic climates with tundra vegetation. Hawaii consists entirely of islands located in a tropical climate zone, while Puerto Rico has an equatorial climate with tropical jungles and beaches.
