It has a total area of 447,400 square kilometers and is the 56th largest country in the world. The terrain of Uzbekistan consists primarily of flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes in the west and mountains in the east. The country’s two main rivers are the Amu Darya and Syr Darya which flow from the mountains to the Aral Sea. The climate of Uzbekistan is generally arid with hot summers and mild winters. Rainfall is sparse throughout most of the country with some areas receiving as little as 100 millimeters per year. The majority of Uzbekistan’s population lives in urban areas along its rivers and near major cities such as Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. Tashkent is the largest city in Uzbekistan with an estimated population of 2 million people making it one of Central Asia’s most populous cities. Other major cities include Namangan, Andijan, Fergana Valley, Kokand, Jizzakh, Nukus and Urgench. The capital city Tashkent lies at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level near to where two rivers meet – Chirchik River and Syr Darya River. It has a continental climate characterized by hot dry summers (July being the hottest month) and cold winters (January being the coldest month). Tashkent also experiences considerable snowfall during winter months which lasts until early springtime making it an ideal place for winter sports activities such as skiing.
